Andy Kim Declines Salary During Government Shutdown

"September 30, 2025

WASHINGTON D.C. – As President Trump and congressional Republicans steer the federal government into a shutdown, Senator Kim is continuing his fight to stand with working families across New Jersey and is formally requesting his paycheck be withheld during a shutdown until the federal government is fully reopened. 

“It’s wrong that the President and Members of Congress get paid during a government shutdown when our military and public servants don’t,” said Senator Kim. “I will be refusing my own pay if we end up in a shutdown. Government leaders shouldn’t be playing with other people’s chips.” 

In a letter to the U.S. Senate Disbursing Office, Senator Kim outlines that if the federal government shuts down due to the current lapse in appropriations, more than 48,000 federal employees and 10,000 active-duty servicemembers living in New Jersey face the prospect of either working without pay or being furloughed. He states that, “this is unacceptable.”

First lady Michelle Obama’s request to speak at a Chesterfield County elementary school, while on the campaign trail in Virginia, was rejected by the school officials, citing that it went against school policy.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports that the Chesterfield school officials refused to discuss the request made by the Obama campaign.

Why wouldn't you want the First Lady to come and speak at your elementary school?

Including Pacific Islanders, 30 Asian-Americans launched campaigns for Congress this year, compared with 10 in 2010 and eight in 2008, according to the Asian Pacific Institute of Congressional Studies (APICS).

A nonpartisan political group, APICS tracks the political engagement of Asian Pacific Americans, now the fastest-growing ethnic group in the United States, but long considered a non-player in the political arena.

"It's extremely exciting," says Gloria Chan, APICS president and CEO. "We could really stand to gain seats and affect the balance of power in Congress."

It was a sentiment widely shared at the OCA Asian Pacific American national convention that ended Sunday at the Planet Hollywood Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.

"We have become more politically savvy," said Chan, a panelist in one of the convention workshops. "The community is more engaged and we have more role models in the federal and state levels."

Elaine Chao + Mitt Romney = Okay. I Guess It's At Least Something For Some Of You

I still don't get certain things (but that's in part because I've been told I have a small brain which doesn't always work, and sometimes I have to take that into consideration), but I still don't always get POC and the GOP. Sure, we can say we're more than just our color and other things override that, but again, sometimes I still don't get it:

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney on Friday announced that former Labor Secretary Elaine Chao would be national chair of his Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders for Romney community.

Chao, who is married to Sen. Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, became the first Asian American woman in the Cabinet as secretary of labor under the administration of George W. Bush from 2001 to 2009. She has also served as chair of the Federal Maritime Commission, deputy secretary of transportation, president and CEO of United Way of America, and director of the Peace Corps.

“I am honored that Gov. Mitt Romney asked me to serve as the national chair of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders for Romney,” said Chao. “Having worked in previous presidential administrations, I know Gov. Mitt Romney has the experience and the character to tackle the problems that are facing our nation. Americans are suffering, and it will take new leadership to put this country on a path to prosperity and full employment.”

"They were more like colonizers than immigrants," Harrison said. Wu Denounces Anti-Chinese Rhetoric Campaigns (And Probably Should Have Done That With His Penis Too)

I'm not saying anything about anything but it is kind of funny and interesting that on one hand we have Rep. David Wu who was quoted in the Northwest Asian Weekly as saying:

“I am deeply disturbed by the xenophobic implications of recent political ads that use China as a scapegoat to discuss the U.S. economy,” said Rep. David Wu, from Oregon. “Given our country’s dark history of anti-Chinese discrimination — from the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act to the racially-motivated murder of Vincent Chin exactly 100 years later — these fear-mongering ads have potentially dangerous consequences, especially for Asian Pacific Americans.

Because this is true.

We all know it.

And we need people like Wu to help bring attention to the growing anti-Chinese sentiment that can be easily mistaken for anti-Chinese American and anti-APIA sentiment.

But then two days later we also get the following:

Rep. David Wu, facing an accusation of an unwanted sexual encounter with an 18-year-old woman and a request for an investigation by the House Ethics Committee, will not seek re-election next year and was pondering whether he would complete his term, a spokesman for the Oregon Democrat said Monday.

In a letter sent Monday, House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi requested the Ethics Committee investigation. The Oregonian, Wu's hometown newspaper, had reported that a California woman left a voicemail at Wu's office accusing him on an unwanted sexual encounter. Wu, 56, has said the encounter was consensual.

I'm just glad Congresswoman Judy Chu (the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus chairwoman) knows how to keep her legs crossed when around young tight bodied eighteen year-olds.

So to get you up to speed this new feud goes something like this:

1. I'm not really sure it's a feud since Cho writes that she actualy got along well with her.
   
2. Even if it's not, I'm still making it a feud because it's just more interesting that way.
   
3. Cho said that "Sarah supposedly blames Bristol harshly and openly (in the circles that I heard it from) for not winning the election, and so she told Bristol she “owed” it to her to do DWTS so that “America would fall in love with her again” and make it possible for Sarah Palin to run in 2012 with America behind her all the way."
   
4. Bristol has responded saying that it saddened her and that if Cho ever has a question to "call me girlfriend" which somehow just doesn't sound right coming out of her keyboard.

I actually believe the Cho even though I can't believe that Palin really might run - and not because I don't know why she's going to run (it's her "brand") but because she probably thinks she's got an actual chance.
