The Queen Bee, Anamika Veeramani, And What's Going On With The Washington Post?

First. Congratulations to 14-year-old Anamika Veeramani who won this year's Scripps National Spelling Bee (among the drama) and takes home $40,000 in cash and prizes - not bad for being able to spell (she won on the word "stromuhr" and should have also gotten extra points for pulling out a Cleveland Cavaliers reference).

At the same time - I just kind of found it interesting that the Washington Post's piece on the Bee didn't really talk much about Anamika Veeramani and her family but instead focused more on a kid named Tim Ruiter.

Hmmmm.

I think all these kids should get their due - because you know they're kids - but I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that over the last three years the winners have all been Indian American (with 8 out of the past 12 winners being Indian American as well) -- or that maybe they just wanted to focus on a different story?

1. Lives in Cleveland.
2. Cavs fan.
3. 8th grader.
4. Wants to go to Harvard.
5. Placed fifth in the 2009 competition.
6. First winner from Ohio since 1964.
7. Finally gets to have a cellphone (although I feel for her friends who would have to decipher if the txts are short-hand or just some word they don't know).

Just like more and more people are forgetting to remember Chinese characters because they're relying on their computers to do the work wondering what's the harm in forgetting a character here and there - the same goes for spellcheck - which has currently been down here at Blogger for the past couple days - and really - should I have to know how to spell tchotchke off the top of my head?
