Random Racism News Links (AKA That Fresh Off The Boat Interview, Those Oscar Nominations, Kid Songs, And Dave Agema's Brain Is Soft)

Friday, January 16, 2015

A quick roundup of some news...

Fresh Off the Boat Cast Gets Racist Question at TCA Panel: See Their Comical Response

Not cool. On ABC’s upcoming comedy Fresh Off the Boat, the Huang family is immigrating from Taiwan to America and navigating the murky waters of racial insensitivities. The cast of future sitcom was similarly met with an offensive question on Wednesday, Jan. 14 at the ABC TCAs, eliciting gasps and uncomfortable laughter in the ballroom of the Langham Hotel in Pasadena Calif. The panel’s very first question of the day came from an unknown reporter who said, “I love the Asian culture. And I was just talking about the chopsticks, and I just love all that. Will I get to see that, or will it be more Americanized?”

Jessica Chastain makes emotional plea to Hollywood to fight against 'racist agendas' following 'all white' Oscars nominations

Jessica Chastain was on the verge of tears as she delivered an impassioned acceptance speech at the Critics' Choice Awards. Accepting the inaugural Most Valuable Player honour on what would have been the 86th birthday of Martin Luther King Jr, she made an emotional plea to Hollywood to use its powerful collective voice to “speak up” against human rights injustices within the industry and the rest of the world. “Today is Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday, so it got me thinking about our need to build the strength of diversity in our industry, and to stand together against homophobic, sexist, misogynistic, anti-Semitic and racist agendas,” she said.

Disturbing video shows children as young as five singing racist song to the tune of 'if you're happy and you know it clap your hands'

A disturbing racist video has emerged of three girls aged between five and seven singing 'if you all hate p**** clap your hands' to the tune of a popular children's song. The three blonde children are shown sitting in a circle clapping their hands while singing the hate chant for the amusement of an adult filming them. During the racist song a toddler boy wanders around the room while the little girls sing the offensive phrase to the tune of 'If you're happy and you know it clap your hands'. The video, believed to have been produced in the Greater Manchester area since the New Year, has sparked outrage online and among anti-racism charities.

The RNC Is Censuring a Member for His Racist Facebook Post—But It Can't Kick Him Out

"Dave Agema's history of harmful and offensive rhetoric has no place in our party, which is why the RNC Executive Committee acted in the swiftest way possible to avoid giving him a platform," Priebus said in a statement Wednesday. "We have voted to censure him, and we are urging the Michigan GOP and their voters to explore options to discipline Agema for his actions. Today, we used all available tools to remove him from the committee."

Agema has a long history of inflammatory remarks, and his latest offense was a late-December post in which he republished an essay from white-supremacist newsletter American Renaissance. The essay—which Agema declared "very enlightening"—argued that "blacks are different by almost any measure to all other people. They cannot reason as well. They cannot communicate as well. They cannot control their impulses as well. They are a threat to all who cross their paths, black and non-black alike."

In Case You Missed It: Hyuna's Red Gets Rolling Stone Approval

Tuesday, January 13, 2015

Hyuna's K-pop hit is a schizophrenic mess, switching from trap and hip-hop to bubbly pop and slinky Middle Eastern electro. The video does its best to keep up: While rapid scene shifts follow the song's structure, wild images bring its lyrics to life. "A monkey's butt is red," goes the chorus, and on screen, a monkey with a bright red butt appears. "My lipstick is red..." and just like that, Hyuna's wiggling on a pair of giant lips. The part where Hyuna's about to cry? That's when she's singing about being lonely. Some major Korean broadcasters thought the original video was too hot for TV, which means it might just right for an American crossover.

Writers Heidi Durrow And Koji Steven Sakai Announce Proposals Being Accepted For “Time Travel is Not for Everyone” Anthology

Monday, January 12, 2015

Writers get your submission on!

“Time Travel is Not for Everyone” is an anthology in the works focused on unlikely time travelers from underrepresented communities who end up in at best unwelcoming situations. Recently writers Heidi Durrow and Koji Steven Sakai announced they are accepting proposals for short stories from writers who would like to be included.

January 11, 2015 Los Angeles, CA–Time travel is the ultimate imagined adventure for many. But for people from underrepresented and minority communities time travel could be more of a disaster than an adventure. An Asian American from 2015 who lands in the United States during World War 2, a gay married couple dropped in the middle of the conservative South in the 1950's, or a mixed-race person transported to Africa during the slave trade would face substantial challenges in those times. This is the founding idea behind an anthology conceived by writers Heidi Durrow and Koji Steven Sakai, Time Travel is Not for Everyone, who recently announced they are accepting proposals for short stories from any writers who would like to participate.

“Before this, time travel has been limited to only a few people, we hope this book allows everyone to travel through time,” said Koji Steven Sakai, who has written four feature films that have been produced, and expects his debut novel to be released in Spring. “This is a great twist on the time travel concept and we know some amazing writers are going to be as excited about contributing, as we are to be working with them.”
According to Sakai and Durrow, the deadline for the proposals is March 1, 2015. Each proposal should include: 1) a one-page proposal featuring a main character from an underrepresented community traveling back in time; 2) a writing biography or resume; and 3) a writing sample of no more than 25 pages.

Science fiction fans have responded to the news of the coming anthology with enthusiasm.

“It's about time that one of the classic science fiction plot lines gets explored in non-traditional ways," said a popular Boston blogger known as Emily G. "We need science fiction to be more inclusive and Time Travel is Not for Everyone sounds like it's going to be a huge leap in that direction,” she said.

Sakai and Durrow have enjoyed success as screenwriters and novelists. Sakai has written the feature films Haunted Highway, The People I’ve Slept With, Monster & Me, and Chink, and another screenplay for Romeo, Juliet, & Rosaline, which was recently optioned by Amazon Studios. Durrow is the New York Times best-selling author of The Girl Who Fell From the Sky, which won the PEN/Bellwether Prize for Socially Engaged Fiction and is a screenwriter of Passing (adapted from Nella Larsen's novel), a finalist in several international film festivals. She is also and the founder of the Mixed Remixed Festival which celebrates stories of multiracial experience and identity.

Margaret Cho + Golden Globes + Ummm... + I'll Still Love Her For Sure

Monday, January 12, 2015

Just because of the disparity in Asian American representation I can definitely understand people not taking to Margaret Cho's bit at the Golden Globes, because if that's it - well - we've seen that before and we want more. We deserve more than that. Even as we grow in visibility on that stage - that recognition, which everyone spoke so fondly of (being able to be a part of) - it's still limited.

It's ironic to me that Tina Fey, who when receiving the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor made mention that she hopes there comes a time when being a woman doesn't need to be mentioned (paraphrasing) can't come up with more versatile roles for someone like Cho.

I wasn't a huge fan of it myself, but it's not the worst thing I've seen either, and unlike the sometimes judge and jury mentality of social media condemnation, I'm not going make it seem like this one moment boils down to her whole career and make it seem like there's nothing more to Cho than this - not for someone who's had a long list of helping to break molds for APIA's.

We'll get there though...someday...hopefully...ummmm....I may have to go door to door to beat people...I mean threaten...I mean talk to...I was never there....

Dwayne Perkins + Raymond C. Lai + Dying to Kill

Tuesday, January 06, 2015

From the release:

Los Angeles, California - Dwayne Perkins, a regular guest on Conan O’Brien, as well as a correspondent for Jay Leno, is thrilled to announce his hour special being taped at the Tateuchi Democracy Theater in the Japanese American National Museum. Perkins will be performing several of his classic bits along with many new classics that have never been seen on TV before. Proceeds will go to support Dying to Kill, a feature film starring Perkins himself and will be the directorial debut of Raymond C. Lai. This special event will be on Sunday, January 11, 2015. General admission is only $25, but guests are encouraged to donate more to help Dying to Kill’s budget.

Described by the filmmakers themselves, Dying to Kill’s plot centers around a paint by the numbers stand-up comic who has four jokes to make his captor laugh or die trying. “Think of it as Misery meets The King of Comedy,” states sources close to the film. “Schafer Jones, loyal husband and serviceable comedian, is in a functional rut telling jokes that pay the bills, but don’t inspire or challenge audiences. His wife, Tracy Jones, and manager/best friend, Jeff Pringle, have been with Schafer through thick and thin. They think Schafer is the funniest guy they know and it breaks their hearts to see him reduced to a human bad joke karaoke machine. Things take a sudden left turn when Schafer is abducted, tortured, and forced to reach new comedic heights or watch his friends and family slaughtered before his very eyes. Can Schafer please his abductor and save his loved ones? The answer is a full-length motion picture of suspense, surprises, and non-stop laughs.”

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR
Raymond C. Lai is an award-winning filmmaker with an MFA in production from the prestigious USC School of Cinematic Arts. Known for his strong character work and comedic prowess, he has garnered fans worldwide with his thesis film “At Your Convenience,” which he co-wrote, directed, and executive produced. Dying to Kill marks his feature film directorial debut and his second foray into genre filmmaking, which he adores.

For more information about Dwayne Perkins and Dying to Kill, you can like the film on Facebook. Dying to Kill’s Facebook page features production notes, in-depth information, and updates on the film’s anticipated release. The Dwayne Perkins Hour Comedy Special is sure to bring down the house and lift your spirits. Contribute to this good cause by supporting the making of this highly anticipated motion picture.

My Random Invention #0.054 For 2015: The Poetic Form "Bốn"

Monday, January 05, 2015

I figured I'd just do some inventing every now and then this year because why not? I have some time on my hands and anyone can be an inventor. There's no inventor license. No inventor final exam or thesis. You just have to invent something. I'm not sure if what I'll invent (or even if you could call them inventions) will be useful, but you know, it's not like anyone else can't go out and invent something else, maybe more useful, or better, or things like that...but that's beside the point...

Here's my invention - the poetic form called "Bốn" with an example below:

Roulette

Their it goes,
Round and round nobody nose,
The ball is as white as flower,
Everyone preys it's their number and no won* wants to go home.

*Won is the currency of South Korea

The form consists of a 4 line stanza where each line has to have one homophone which is the incorrect usage, with the last line having two homophones (of incorrect usage). One of those two homophones in the last line has to be either a homograph, homonym, or homophone with a corresponding word in another language. Optional asterisk and reader note. No other limitations.

So...

That's it...I guess...

Invention #0.054 done for 2015 and I did it without pants (don't worry, I was wearing underwear and a robe).

Here's to hoping I can make myself fly by using two pieces of cardboard and some duct tape...

Invention #0.107 here I come...
