Silicon Valley + Vietnamese Americans + Historic Election

Tuesday, January 23, 2024

 From the newswire:

"Little Saigon may be on the precipice of electing its first-ever Vietnamese American to the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors, and a potential key voice in decisions on homelessness, mental health services and law enforcement spending.

The two candidates seen as frontrunners in the race for the District 2 seat are Vietnamese American women: Betty Duong, chief of staff for D2 Supervisor Cindy Chavez, and Madison Nguyen, who was the first Vietnamese American member and vice mayor on the San Jose City Council.

The other candidates are Corina Herrera-Loera, a trustee with the Alum Rock Union School District, Jennifer Celaya, a Native American founder of the nonprofit New Beginnings, and Nelson McElmurry, a practicing attorney.

“The hope that always comes with a race like this is that we are able to elect representatives who elevate our voice and can project an image of a community that has come into political maturity,” Huy Tran, a San Jose resident and community leader, told San José Spotlight. Tran ran for city council in 2020."

Beef, Steven Yeun, And Ali Wong: Killing It With Golden Globe And Emmy Wins Making History

Wednesday, January 17, 2024

Watching "Beef" with Steven Yeun and Ali Wong winning these awards--Yeun and Wong both won Golden Globes for their roles--becoming the first and second actors who are Asian to win the award--as well as the show sweeping the Golden Globes and winning Emmys for Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie and Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie (which is also a FIRST for an Asian woman) and creator Lee Sung Jin earning Emmy's for writing AND directing--

I don't know about you--but my 15 year-old self would have LOVED to see this, and I can only imagine what this means, and doesn't mean (like it's just a regular day in the park) to a new generation who is just growing up with this type of entertainment.

While the entertainment side of the house isn't the holy grail--there's so much from a representation standpoint, local, national, et al.--it means a lot in so many ways for so many Asian Americans--for us--because we get to see ourselves on the big a little screens, winning awards, where at the base it's simply: They like us and accept us and that means maybe we can make a inroads in other areas too (and yes, we can make inroads when no one else wants us to, but it's easier if we wave that support without discrimination).

P.S.

Big ups to VIETNAMESE AMERICAN Ali Wong who gave props to her ex-husband. Shows the way for so many people.

CAAM + Watch Reel Midwest: Homegrown on PBS Beginning January 15

Watch Reel Midwest: Homegrown on PBS Beginning January 15
“Although Asian American communities are thought of as being more recent and located on the east or west coasts, the Midwest is a region with a long and rich history of Asian Americans."
-- Stephen Gong, Executive Director, CAAM

What comes to mind when you think of the American heartland? Well, think again, as the new PBS series Reel Midwest: Homegrown expands the public consciousness by shining light on BIPOC experiences in this region. CAAM partnered with Firelight Media to produce this limited series featuring eight short documentaries including Native American stories about seed and language preservation; African American and immigrant stories about finding community, and the story of Zee, a nursing student from China pursuing their dreams in a small town. Read about Hao Zhou’s inspiration for telling Zee’s story, on the CAAM blog and watch the series trailer on YouTube. Then get ready to watch the series on PBS, the PBS website and app beginning January 15.
