Beef, Steven Yeun, And Ali Wong: Killing It With Golden Globe And Emmy Wins Making History

Watching "Beef" with Steven Yeun and Ali Wong winning these awards--Yeun and Wong both won Golden Globes for their roles--becoming the first and second actors who are Asian to win the award--as well as the show sweeping the Golden Globes and winning Emmys for Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie and Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie (which is also a FIRST for an Asian woman) and creator Lee Sung Jin earning Emmy's for writing AND directing--

I don't know about you--but my 15 year-old self would have LOVED to see this, and I can only imagine what this means, and doesn't mean (like it's just a regular day in the park) to a new generation who is just growing up with this type of entertainment.

While the entertainment side of the house isn't the holy grail--there's so much from a representation standpoint, local, national, et al.--it means a lot in so many ways for so many Asian Americans--for us--because we get to see ourselves on the big a little screens, winning awards, where at the base it's simply: They like us and accept us and that means maybe we can make a inroads in other areas too (and yes, we can make inroads when no one else wants us to, but it's easier if we wave that support without discrimination).

I Feel Like I Want More Vern Yip

Lately I seem to have a lot of HGTV on and I just don't seem to see Vern Yip on as much anymore. I know he has a design business and does a lot of non-profit work and also hosts up on HGTV Star, but it's a short show. Sure, most of the higher rated shows are diy/reno/house hunting/flipping shows where they do a lot of the design, so I wonder if it leaves room for much else, but maybe there's a room for something a little different (Vern + questions from online viewers + tips and tricks?).

An Open Letter To The Golden Globes

Dear Golden Globes,

While this probably comes as no surprise to you (or me for that matter) I just have to ask the question again about all the major category nominees and why there's almost no People Of Color, and *gasp* no members from the APIA community?

Sure, maybe you can say that it's because of the lack of APIA faces in television and movies, but you know what? It's your job to seek them out. It's your job to elevate - make another major category if you have too so at least I can see some people that look like me in the coverage of your awards show and maybe (it's a slight maybe), people might start to go "Hmmm...I should cast them in my film, or television show".

But then again, maybe I'm in la la land (which some will say I am), because at the end of the day, I guess it's just the Golden Globes?

If you're a fan of Roopashree Jeevaji as well as CSI, than this pairing is for you.

On Wednesday, November 16, 2011, Roopashree "Roopa" Jeevaji appears in the hit CBS drama "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation".

Big Bang Theory, Weird Indian Stuff, And Ruining Her For White Boys

Eating a glorious meal of rice, microwave pot roast, and microwave green beans while sitting naked with my life size Kermit The Frog Muppet, I flipped to "The Big Bang Theory" and heard the following as Penny and Raj were talking about their "night" together:

Raj: We didn't sleep together in the typical way.

Penny: What? Did you do some weird Indian stuff to me? [...] So we didn't sleep together? [...]

Raj: Can I say I ruined you for White Men?

I'm semi-paraphrasing, but you get the gist (the White Men and weird Indian stuff is pretty much verbatim) and I can't help but wonder that even though Raj got to come back with ruining her for White Men wouldn't it have been better if Penny just said "weird Geek stuff" instead and Raj still got to say the joke about White Men?

Sure, you'd still have the APIA guy lusting after a White Woman, but then again, if she had said it, maybe I wouldn't have noticed that he was lusting after a White Woman versus just his roommate's friend...

Ki Hong Lee + Pacific Citizen

Just a little snippet you might be interested in.

For showbiz newcomer Ki Hong Lee avoiding being pigeonholed as the geeky Asian American on TV was on his mind when he landed his first major role.

When the Korean American got the part of Paul on ABC Family’s “The Nine Lives of Chloe King,” he was careful not to play in to geek stereotypes by opting to wear his contacts instead of his glasses, among other things.

But Lee had nothing to worry about.

“When I first got it [the role] the description of him was kind of this comic book fan and when you first read that you think he’s a geek. So I was really worried like, ‘Are they going to dress me up nerdy?’” Lee said via telephone from Los Angeles, Calif. “But they’ve done a good job of showing different layers of the character.”

I just might have to bribe people to watch this for me.

Dia Gets Second Place In NBC's The Voice

Just caught this on a-tunes (missed the show) and wanted to post up a piece of it here:

In a tough and close results show, Dia Frampton unfortunately lost the title to the first ever season of NBC’s The Voice to veteran singer Javier Colon. It was a well deserved win for Javier but we can’t help but wish that Dia had won top honors. Needless to say, she’s had an incredible run, beating out many other singers and earning herself a world of new exposure and fans. We commend and applaud her for her efforts and hope that this experience will only strengthen her career along with her band, Meg & Dia. Don’t forget to catch her and the other top 7 competitors on tour!

I'm not saying I actually watch this show a lot, so I can't really tell you about any racist jokes that might be directed towards Adhir Kalyan (aka Timmy) - but I do know that at least on last night's episode of Rules Of Engagement - Timmy was having a lot of sex - and while that's not the end all be all - well - it could be worse.

He could be on Outsourced where apparently they still like to make fun of people's names (because that obviously never gets old).

Yeah.

I'll stick with Timmy if I have a choice.
