#250posts24hrsAAPI - 48: Apparently The Andi Mack Audience Is Just Getting Bigger

If you check out the Wikipedia page on Disney's Andi Mack, you can see the progression from the first episode which garnered 1.24 million viewers, to the latest episode - number 7 "Dad Influence" - which has around 1.49 million viewers, with each episode going up or staying on par with it's previous episode in viewership (except episode three which went down to 1.19 million viewers from episode 2's 1.24 million viewers - but episode four had 1.27 million viewers).

Which all goes to show that maybe there is some home for the future.

Seriously?

Anyone?

When I checked out the Wiki on this show (which is how I found out Dong got deported because you couldn't pay me enough to watch season 2 - and again - his name was Dong MF's) I didn't see anyone new replacing Ki Hong Lee (and no I don't want Dong #2).

Which only goes to show me that The Fey actually didn't think about us as anything more than just disposable laughs for White People as I originally said.

Yeah - that's not a shocker.

By all means - being a parent and having kids doesn't make you any better than anyone else - let me just be clear about my overall thought pattern.

But there is something to be said for being an Asian American parent and if possible - having an Asian American partner by your side (in this case my wife) and being able to parent with them.

And specifically for this post I'm talking about Asian American women who get their mothering on who I see so many do.

Honestly - we couldn't do it without you and if I had to choose between my daughter growing up without me, or my wife (and hopefully I'd go out in a blaze of glory like keeling over after eating 100 hot dogs) - I'd choose my wife because my daughter should have a strong Asian American woman to help guide her through life - because - well - that's important.

#250posts24hrsAAPI - 43: Next Time I'm In Vietnam I'm Going To Try Something Fury (Is This Too Chinky For You?)

I was down in the motherland last month and while I didn't get a ton of time there as I had a ton to do (maybe more posts on that later - or not - we'll see where I go with the rest of these posts because I'm not even half way there yet), I will in fact go down and find some of those places, wherever I can find them (as I'm sure some are not there anymore).

It's not necessarily like I'm dying to eat someone fury, but I was talking with a friend about this, and it is a Western thing - and for some odd reason I feel like I should at least try this just because.

It doesn't mean I'm stealing pets in the middle of the night for good - let's not take this out of context - and some might equate this post with a bad joke about dog eating Asians - but that's kind of the point too - because it's not.

But where do we draw the line between "acceptable" practices here in America from an Asian American perspective, and what's deemed "acceptable" in other countries - specifically our Motherlands?

And that's not to say it's prevalent in the Motherland either - because it's not - so let's get that clear as well too.

But it's there if you want to find it.

Just some thoughts.

As I was updating that 1st post to include the change:

"But I'll give it a try (because in some ways I feel like if I can't find 250 things to post on from the APIA/Asian community, in addition to other topics, than that's my issue)." since this is a part of the quest I thought I would just ramble for a bit that hey - it's influences. It's intersectionality. This is a part of being Asian American because we are part of a landscape.

It doesn't mean we can't like other things.

It doesn't mean we can't be influenced, and haven't been influenced by other communities and individuals.

Because that's a part of being Asian American - just like having a love for so many other Asian, but non-American things.

That's just a part of who we are.

Just don't forget about us, or our community either.

And On Game Of Thrones

Honestly, I don't watch this show. I've sat down and watched a few episodes with K-Wife, but I know of a decent amount of POC and Asian Americans who do like this show and while I give K-Wife some gentle ribbing on the White People, it's not like I didn't watch Dexter where the main character was White (and sure it helped that it had C. S. Lee and other POC but you get my point).

We like what we like sometimes and we wouldn't be human if we didn't like things from all cultures and communities.

#250posts24hrsAAPI - 41: I Like Seeing My Viet Baby Eat Phở

As an Asian American dad I can't help but sometimes just get all giggly when my daughter (and I'll have to come up with a name for her like K-Wife) eats Vietnamese food like phở. There's just something about seeing your child eat the food from the Motherland that in some ways says - she's doing okay, I'm at least giving her something - because while Asian, I'm still American, and there are those times when dinner consists of pizza and whatever else I can find around the house at times.

So in some ways as well - I guess it just makes me feel like I'm doing okay as a dad - and as an Asian American dad, and a dad of color, I do sometimes feel some extra weight in that department.

And I'm not saying her eating Viet food is the end all be all of dadding - but it makes me feel good that she likes it and that I haven't corrupted her taste buds on just things like Captain Crunch.

P.S.

Apparently my dinner which is some pad thai (thanks to K-Wife) is also tasty for my daughter too.

She's a snuggly bunny btw.

While you may or may not have seen this already from the 2017 Diverse Intelligence Series I found some of these facts pretty interesting including the following (and my random notes in italics).

1. The U.S.-born Asian American female population is growing faster than the foreign-born population, with 60% growth vs. 43% respectively since 2005

Asian American women taking over the world - yes!

2. 76% of Asian American women will pay for a brand they trust, even if it is slightly more expensive

Tell me something I don't know xD?

3. Asian American women have the highest smartphone penetration of any racial or ethnic group in the U.S.

What? I thought it might be Asian American teenage boys, but apparently this is incorrect

4. 66% of Asian American females use online banking, 22% higher than the total adult population.

Because Asian American women have shit to do. They can't be licking envelopes at the bank drive-thru MF's!

If you were curious as to how the Asian American community voted (at least from one organization) check out the data down at the National Asian American Survey which is a "scientific and nonpartisan effort to poll the opinions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders" (just want to make sure and quote that from their site).

Key findings from the 2016 NAAS post-election survey:

When compared to the 2012 AAPI Post-Election Study, Clinton did about as well as Obama did among Asian American voters and won every segment of the Asian American vote

For the first time, the NAAS surveyed Bangladeshi and Pakistani American voters, and these groups show among the strongest levels of Democratic party identification and strongest support for Clinton over Trump

Despite record gains in voters, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders were less likely than Whites or Blacks to be contacted by political parties

The most serious problems facing Asian Americans include the affordability of college, health care, and elder care

Asian Americans are progressive on various aspects of economic policy, but are more split when it comes to policies relating to undocumented immigrants

Maybe we're just not that interesting?

A new article down at The Daily Mail and the ongoing battle against - well technically us.

Admission officers at Princeton University once noted that some American-Asian applicants were difficult to differentiate because of their 'very familiar profiles' and wrote that the potential students were 'standard premeds'. The comments were highlighted by federal investigators as part of a probe into allegations of racial bias within the Ivy League school's admissions system several years ago. While the seven-year investigation into its admissions practices was closed and the university was found not to have discriminated based on race, the documents highlighting the comments - some of which have been obtained by Buzzfeed - now form part of an ongoing legal battle.

And from Buzzfeed:

But documents obtained by BuzzFeed News show Princeton’s admissions officers repeatedly wrote of Asian-American applicants as being difficult to differentiate, referring to them dismissively as having “very familiar profiles,” calling them “standard premeds,” or “difficult to pluck out.” The comments were noted by civil rights investigators at the Education Department as they probed allegations of racial bias in the school’s admissions system.
