Sonal Shah: When You Need A Wedding Planner

Nearly 70% her business comes from New York City area. Elsewhere, she puts her Big Apple moxie to good use to satisfy her clients' needs. “New Yorkers never take no for an answer,” she says. “People say, ‘Wow, you're really pushy.' ”

Her network of contacts and resources around the country include people like singularly-named Arden, a Birmingham, Ala.-based, photographer. “Sonal and I worked together on a huge wedding here, and we've since done several—one just now in Houston,” says Arden. “Indian weddings are my favorite. They're so out of the element I grew up in, I find them fascinating. As a photographer, it doesn't get any better—the colors are amazing!”

She's especially impressed at the way Ms. Shah and her team controls every aspect of a ceremony that can take place over days and span cities or even continents. “You've got to have someone who can get people to the next step in an event but not be a drill sergeant about it,” says Arden.
