Margaret Chin: Maybe NYC Chinatown's First

Sunday, October 04, 2009

First Liu, and now maybe Margaret Chin.

Even though the downtown Manhattan neighborhood is one of the largest Chinese communities outside of Asia, up until now, no Chinese American has ever sat on a District 1 Council, but Chin, whose family came from Hong Kong when she was 9, beat out the incumbent Alan Gerson last month, and is the current front runner to win in November.

Chin said she's excited to finally break the Chinese American barrier.

"People want to get involved and want to be part of the mainstream and want to make sure that the community that they come from is represented," Chin said. "The dynamics of the city are changing."
