Yes. I Really Am Learning How To Salsa

Tuesday, October 06, 2009

I have to be honest that I don't exactly know how I found myself taking lessons for both Salsa and the Merengue, but it has made me think about a few things:

  • I can't believe I actually said I would do this.
  • It's just not natural.
  • I don't "pop" and "lock" swinging my hips from side to side as I shift my weight from one leg to the other as I wait in line at a store (the example used by the instructor on how to do the steps).
  • Hoodie+boots=better.
  • Just for the record, I'm really not repping for the Asian American male so far. One of my many dance partners actually said to me "Don't lead me into the wall." She was nice about it, but still, she had to say it.
  • To answer any questions out there No, I have not led anyone into an actual wall, and Yes, it was my first class. Thank you for asking.
  • An Amazonian White Girl who kind of did a little jitterbug meth dance gave me "The Donger" look.
  • I've since figured out how to correctly space myself so she isn't one of my partners.

It won't always be pretty, and there will be plenty of carnage left in my wake (as there already has been), and I don't have any illusions of being a contestant on a reality show whatsoever as I'm just going for moderate and natural looking - but I will get this.
