About Time: Plans For A San Jose Vietnamese American Community Center

I figure that in life you win some, and you lose some, but just because you were down and out one day, doesn't mean you shouldn't be heard the next day and I hope people rally behind Madison Nguyen as she pushes for a new Vietnamese American community center in San Jose where there's about 100,000 Vietnamese Americans:

"This is a great opportunity, post the Little Saigon discussion, for the community to come together and advocate for the services," said Michele Lew, president and chief executive of Asian Americans for Community Involvement, a non-profit group. "I hope this is a unifying project for the community."

The 33-year-old Nguyen, a former Franklin-McKinley Board of Education member in 2002, was the first Vietnamese woman elected to office in the state.

Regardless of the recall attempt, Nguyen said Monday, she is driven to follow through on a campaign promise.

"We have been working on this the last 21/2 years," Nguyen said. "Whether or not the recall would happen, this is something that I want to see move forward."
